We present the best 8 events of the upcoming weekend. Find out what to do in Warsaw and where to buy Christmas gifts.

1) Christmas Illumination

Let the illumination begin! Every year we are waiting impatiently for Warsaw to light up with Christmas decorations. We even put it on our 35 AMAZING THINGS TO DO IN WARSAW IN 2020 list. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic restrictions, there will be no event inaugurating the lights. All we know is that this weekend the Christmas tree in Plac Zamkowy and decorations along the Royal Route will light up. Still, Warsaw Christmas Illumination is the most romantic and charming event of the year.

2) 13th Divine Comedy International Festival – online edition

After months of binge-watching Netflix, HBO GO, and YouTube, we finally have a theatrical alternative. There are 23 performances to watch, including 8 premieres. That all plus debates and meetings with artists. This year’s leitmotif is “A sensitive narrator” inspired by Olga Tokarczuk’s Nobel speech. “Bieguni”, an adaptation of her novel, has all the makings of a hit. Even if your Polish still needs some polishing, don’t hesitate to tune in, because this festival is the best Polish theaters have to offer this year.

when: from Saturday, December 5, to Sunday, December 13

3) Back to Front. 5th Festival of Abstract Thought

Come for a walk to Jazdów and find the festival hidden in trees, window sills, and fences. There are QR codes and links to lectures to listen to, envelopes with exercise to do, as well as creative micro-tasks. Different approaches to the imagination are the leitmotif of the festival.

4) Christmas fairs and markets

As we will celebrate Saint Nick’s on Sunday, these three events present a perfect opportunity to get some heart-warming gifts for the loved ones:

  • We recommend the Winter Market in Fort 8 not only because it is an excellent place on the capital city’s food map and that makes it sensible to support it during a pandemic. Most importantly, the organizers managed to encourage local producers and sellers to participate. At the stands we will find, i.e. Wódka Gessler na Widelcu products, honey and propolis from the Domański apiary, and original ceramics from Dominika Parol.

when: Saturday and Sunday, December 5 and 6, from 10:00 to 18:00

  • Christmas Vintage Bazaar in Elektrownia Powiśle will present products from the vintage, upcycle, handmade, jewelry, eco-cosmetics, plants, books, and vinyl categories.

  • Pop up Store SHOP LOCAL! in Blue City it is an opportunity to buy clothes and accessories, jewelry, articles for children, cosmetics, and Christmas decorations that are not available in stores on a daily basis.

6) International Tango Day 2020

In 2009, the Argentine and Uruguayan tango tradition entered the UNESCO heritage list. International Tango Day falls on the birthday of the most eminent singer Carlos Gardel and composer/conductor Julio de Caro. Warsaw organizers invite you to a concert of the Argentine tango orchestra “La Sanluistango” with Polish singer Magdalena Lechowska. Dance masters will also perform on stage.

7) Gingerbread baking and decorating workshop

We admit that we strongly associate the smell of gingerbread with family warmth at Christmas. That’s why we want to learn how to make and decorate gingerbread cookies like a pro. The workshop will be run by the creator of a blog about pastries – Mała Cukierenka. Importantly, the gingerbreads will also be prepared in a vegan version!

when: Saturday, December 5, baking workshop and Sunday, December 6, decorating workshop; both workshops start at 16:00

8) ART IS BETTER WITH YOU

It is a conference looking for an answer to the question of how European museums and theaters started a new era in culture. In our opinion, one Friday debate really stands out. It is the lecture by Lizzy Jongma (from Europeana – a platform aimed at the digitization of cultural collections in Europe) How crowdsourcing helps build communities, strengthen connections with the audience, and learn new things.

when: Friday, December 4, from 10:00 to 15:00
